How to evaluate AI-assisted production scheduling
Test a scheduling assistant against real constraints and planner decisions before drawing conclusions about its value.
Discuss your requirements
Define the task and the baseline
Decide whether the assistant is summarizing constraints, suggesting a sequence, explaining an exception, or taking an action. Establish a reproducible baseline with the planner. Specify mandatory constraints, approved inputs, permitted tools, and the decisions that remain with a person.
Include difficult planning cases
Test unavailable material, conflicting priorities, setup constraints, missing data, and an equipment outage. Check whether recommendations expose assumptions and can be rejected or corrected. Separate a plausible explanation from a feasible schedule.
Measure with appropriate review
Agree on evaluation cases and error thresholds before comparison. Record model and provider details, data boundaries, human approval, logging, monitoring, and a non-AI fallback or disablement path. Do not attribute an operational change to AI without a defensible comparison and review of other contributing changes.
